Spinal Cord Stimulators Evaluations
A psychological evaluation prior to implanting a spinal cord stimulator is a key step in preparing for the procedure and optimizing long-term success. Because chronic pain is not just a physical experience, but involves mood, coping strategies, expectations and behavior, Dr. Gibson can assist in assessing factors such as anxiety, depression, coping style, pain beliefs, and readiness for an implanted device. The purpose is not to “pass or fail” the patient, but rather to determine whether any psychological or behavioral issues need to be addressed first—and to ensure the patient understands the realistic benefits, risks and lifestyle changes associated with the stimulator.
During the evaluation you can expect a session (often around one hour) in which you will be asked about your pain history, emotional health, previous treatments, lifestyle factors (such as sleep, substance use, family/social support) and expectations for the stimulator. Dr. Gibson will also review whether you understand how the stimulator works, what the trial and implantation process involves, and how you will need to engage in post-implant care.
